Mermaid Halloween

Every year Rosemary asks me if she can be a mermaid for Halloween, and every year except this year, I have said no. It's not the most practical costume around when you live at the north end of the midwest ... You can guarantee at least a chill in the air, and you can't be too surprised if you end up with a blizzard. So a mermaid costume has always seemed cold and uncomfortable. I was inspired, however, by seven thirty three's tutorial, and much to Rosemary's delight, she got to be a mermaid this year.

Once again, I am compelled to apologize for the photo quality. A new camera is simply not in our budget and so I am limited to the camera on my phone - which is actually a decent camera when you have time to worry about the lighting, and are trying to photograph somebody other than a squirrelly 5-year-old who would rather be trick-or-treating.

You can see we took some creative license with the tutorial, but basically the tail and the water skirt are exactly the same. I also did make the cloak, but it was a warm enough night and Rosemary preferred to go without.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I made these whole wheat pumpkin pancakes on Tuesday and they are "OMG yum." OMG is not a phrase I use lightly. Or ever. I made them with homemade pumpkin puree, following Alton Brown's instructions, and in about an hour I'm going to use the leftover puree to make Smitten Kitchen's pumpkin muffins. I'll let you know how they turn out. I'm going to a knitting retreat (woooohooooo!) this weekend and I don't want to show up empty handed.
