The Great Swiss Chard Disaster of 2010

You may or may not remember my first experience with Swiss Chard, in which I fell in love, sweet love with the vegetable. We planted a very limited supply of the heavenly leaf and I spent the rest of the summer trying to chase some down. I always seemed to arrive at the farmers market minutes too late.

So this summer we quadrupled our supply and then, when it was finally time to harvest it ... we ruined it. I have spent a year pining for the taste of a large nest of Swiss Chard with a poached egg inside. When it was finally ready, I found last year's post (see link above), and went to work.

The final product looked okay; but let's just say it wasn't so easy to gag down. If this had been my first experience with Swiss Chard, I would not ever have tried it again. Needless to say, I lost my membership in the clean plate club the night we ate this.

I went back to the original In My Kitchen Garden post and reread the comments to see if there was anything I did wrong. I was definitely too vague in my previous description because I didn't cover the swiss chard, I stood over it and stirred it. Also, Joel convinced me to turn the heat down because he didn't want the butter to burn.

So, as disgusting as this was, I will not give up on Swiss Chard. We used nearly our entire harvest of the vegetable on this disaster, but I am determined to hit the farmers markets early for the next few weeks and perfect this meal ... as well as some others, like this Swiss Chard and Artichoke Pizza.

I'll keep you posted.

  2. Ah - we've had swiss chard in our CSA box for a while now. I've been afraid of it, but then I remembered your last years post. I cooked ours in bacon grease with some garlic and chicken. It was tasty.
